Mountain Landscape Photography (Mono County | June Lake Loop | Mammoth)

Hot Creek Geological Site | Hot Creek Hatchery Road, Mammoth Lakes, CA | October 19, 2024 at Sunrise | Photo by Ryan Angel Meza.

This weekend, my colleague (Justin Sotelo) and I took a scouting trip to Mono County/ June Lake Loop area in preparation for a landscape photography course we co-teach together in November. We wanted to tour some areas that we haven’t visited before since we are here for merely 3 days (technically 2.5 days). I am always in awe of the beauty that California offers, particularly the Eastern Sierra.

During this trip, we visited Hot Creek Geological Site in Mammoth Lakes, CA and what an incredible site to see given the vantage point of the view. It makes it so easy to practice landscape photography when you literally just park your car and walk a few feet to this amazing view.

After photographing Hot Creek Geological Site, we headed to McGee Creek trailhead for some potential “long exposure” photography of the creek.

To access the creek where this photo was taken, it’s simply a few yards away from the parking lot. You should see a subtle visible path that will take you to this exact spot (plus you can also hear the creek).

Caption: Justin Sotelo (my colleague, friend and co-teacher for our Mountain Landscape Photography class) just photographed some icicles that formed along the creekside. While not as clear in this photo, it is a slippery and relatively inclined slope to access that area he was photographing.
